Asia Argento was born in Rome, Italy, into a family of actors and filmmakers. Both professions she's taken up. At the age of nine she was first seen in her debut film Sergio Cittis Sogni e bisogni. She played the lead role in Cristina Comencini's Zoo (1988) as well as part of Michele Soavi's 1989 feature film The Church. Red Wood Pigeon, directed by Moretti in 1989, was her part as Nanni Moretti's little daughter. Close Friends (1992), directed and written by Michele Placido was the film that really launched Asia's professional career. It was her first time moving from roles of a young girl to complex and mature roles. The film was a hit during the Cannes International Film Festival. She has made three films along with her father, Trauma, The Stendhal syndrome, and Phantom of the opera. The Phantom of the Opera is the third film she has acted in with her Father, which includes Trauma and The Stendhal Syndrome. Asia's absorbed and intense approach to acting was also utilized for the part of Giuseppe Piccioni in Condannato a nozze. Patrice Chereau directed Queen Margot and she also had the role of the physically challenged girl in that film. The year 1995 was the first time she starred in a film with Michel Piccoli as Traveling Companion as played by Peter Del Monte. This part earned her a David di Donatello (for the top actor) and an award from Grolla in Oro. Asia started directing as an occupation in the year 1994. The first film she directed was Prospettive. The documentary she made about her dad was followed by Abel/Asia (1998), a film that was awarded a prize in the Rome Film Festival in 1998. They were the two films she produced between 1996 and 1998. In 1999 Asia made her feature-directing debut with Scarlet Diva (2000), where she played the lead actress as well as the writer for the script. It was released on May 20 the 20th of May, 2000 in Italy and around the globe. The film was released on Brooklyn, New York it was awarded an award at the Williamsburg film festival. After directing numerous music videos and giving birth, she welcomed the first of her daughters, Anna Lou. She was a part of Jean-Marc Barr's performance in The Red Siren, directed by Olivier Megaton. In 2003 she was in Vin Diesel and Rob Cohen's action-thriller. The short stories of Asia have appeared in high-profile publications.
